This book was originally written for the purpose of disenchanting certain credulous inquirers, who fancied that the exercise of spiritual powers could be taught by teaching them certain incantations and formulas. It was to prove that spiritual powers must be developed before they can be exercised, and to explain the conditions necessary for their development. Since the appearance of the previous edition, a little additional knowledge, gained by the experiences of my own inner life, has enabled me to make certain corrections; to sift out much of what was irrelevant, and to remodel a great deal of what was incorrectly expressed. Moreover in this edition an attempt has been made to answer the numerous questions which have been addressed to me by the readers of "Magic". The most serious objection which has been made against this book has been on account of its title; but the causes which induced me to select such a title were suggested by the purpose for which the book was intended; nor would I at present be able to find one more appropriate for it, for "Magic" means that divine art or exercise of spiritual power by which the awakened spirit in man controls the invisible living elements in the soul-substance of the universe; but, above all, those in his own soul, which are the ones nearest to him. If we desire to master any forces whatever, it is, above all, necessary to know what they are and how they originate, and as we have no better means to study the qualities of any internal forces, than by observing those which are active within ourselves, the perception of the processes going on within our own psychic organism, will be the means to accomplish our object.

"The Pantianos Classics version (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform) is a 204 pages unrevised Fourth Edition and from an 1888 publishing. I recommend the Fourth Edition Revised from around 1893. I own an original 1893 printing by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., London. It is 300 pages. Franz Hartmann kept revising and “improving†his book. The author mentions this in his preface. The 300 page Fourth Edition Revised I think is best. I don’t know about the American Eighth Edition from 1911 and needs to be investigated. All in all, a great book but you should be aware of versions history."

- Franz Hartmann was one of the leading occultists of turn-of-the 19th Century/Rise of Hitler era of Germany. He was a member of the still largely secret occult group that practiced in late Victorian Great Britain (as it then was) and Europe. He travelled widely around the world gathering occult knowledge which he shared in secret publications with his associates. Along with magicians from England, Germany and Austria he once gathered in Vienna to create a 'moon child' an incubus (said to walk among us to this day). He was a founding member of the Munich Thule Gesellschaft, the society created to hide the identity of the O.T.O., and which funded Hitler's rise to power. In Magic White & Black Hartmann provides the lay reader with a sermon on the separation of the physical self (the meat machine) from the soul (the ghost in the shell). The practicing occultists here sees the coded guidance to the first steps toward the separation of body from spirit, a provocation to further enquiry and eventual enlightenment. An excellent and essential addition to any occult library and a guide for those who read beyond the turn of the century prose.

- I have read this a couple times and bought a copy to loan out since I talk about it all the time. It's also one of those neat books you can open at a random page and get a synchromystical wisdom nugget.
- This is one of the best books on Magic and Occult Sciences I have read! I really like Franz's writing style, and he has a very in-depth level of knowledge.

- This provides a distillation of many valuable elements of occultism, while remaining objective and circumspect. It provides a wealth of wisdom for all, but this appears to have been designed more for initiates and those well-versed with the body of knowledge. It will give some to many and much to some.
