New York Times bestselling author of On the Island, Tracey Garvis Graves, presents the compelling, hopelessly romantic novel of unconditional love.

Annika (rhymes with Monica) Rose is an English major at the University of Illinois. Anxious in social situations where she finds most people's behavior confusing, she'd rather be surrounded by the order and discipline of books or the quiet solitude of playing chess.

Jonathan Hoffman joined the chess club and lost his first game―and his heart―to the shy and awkward, yet brilliant and beautiful Annika. He admires her ability to be true to herself, quirks and all, and accepts the challenges involved in pursuing a relationship with her. Jonathan and Annika bring out the best in each other, finding the confidence and courage within themselves to plan a future together. What follows is a tumultuous yet tender love affair that withstands everything except the unforeseen tragedy that forces them apart, shattering their connection and leaving them to navigate their lives alone.

Now, a decade later, fate reunites Annika and Jonathan in Chicago. She's living the life she wanted as a librarian. He's a Wall Street whiz, recovering from a divorce and seeking a fresh start. The attraction and strong feelings they once shared are instantly rekindled, but until they confront the fears and anxieties that drove them apart, their second chance will end before it truly begins.

"When this ARC showed up in the mail, I completely forgot that I had even signed up to be a part of the campaign. To be honest, I wasn’t even sure that the campaign was legitimate because it said that there were 1000 ARCs available, which was utterly mind-blowing. I am so incredibly happy to have had the pleasure of being introduced to this phenomenal book that I don’t think that I would picked up under normal circumstances.

Before I even say anything else, I am going to start by saying I LOVED this book. I read this book in one sitting. This book has officially gone into the “I will recommend this to anyone who will listen to me” repertoire.

The book opens with Annika bumping into her college boyfriend Jonathan at the grocery store 10 years after they broke up. Annika wants to flee the situation, but she chooses to stay rooted and speak to Jonathan. Both are a bit rattled seeing each other after so long and it is clear by Jonathan’s body language that he is hesitant to embrace Annika. Prior to Jonathan leaving the store, Annika asks Jonathan if he’d like to get together some time, which he ultimately agrees to. Annika wants another chance with Jonathan to start fresh and right the wrongs from their past.

‘But I will call. I’ll apologize. Ask him if we can start over. “Clean slate,” I’ll say. Such is my desire to replace the memories of the girl he used to know with the woman I’ve become’

While at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Annika is only ever at the Wildlife Medical Clinic (she had an extreme passion for animal care), the library, or the student union playing chess. Annika is an exceptional chess player since she’d been playing with her dad since she was a kid. Her roommate Janice ultimately coerced Annika into joining the chess team in order to get Annika to be more social and assimilate into collegiate life. Jonathan ultimately joins the chess club after immediately being attracted to Annika not only for her looks but her quirks as well.

I really enjoyed that this story is told from both Annika’s and Jonathan’s first-person POV because it becomes more evident throughout the book how difficult their relationship was on each of them. Annika is on the autism spectrum, which is addressed throughout the book. This causes a whole slew of complications for both Annika and Jonathan since this is uncharted territory for the both of them.

I don’t want to give any specifics of the plot, but I think that the author does a heartbreakingly beautiful job of showing the difficulties and also the joys that Annika’s unique character brings to the story. Annika is brutally honest and has absolutely no filter. She knows that society has told her that she is attractive, but she doesn’t grasp its importance. This story isn’t just about second chances. It’s also about letting go of someone you love in order to understand how to love yourself first.

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and @SmartBitches for the advanced copy. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own."

  • I'm really sorry to give this book only 3 stars. I truly wanted to love it because Annika's character could and should have been not only a breath of fresh reading air but also a amazing character to learn from. Yet I found myself at the 50 percent mark feeling a bit bored by the story and that bummed me out. There were some scenes in the book that stirred emotions for me and that I found engaging such as Janice going to get Annika from the dorm room with Jake. that part was so good but then it would run so bland again for me .I wanted more of Janice and Annika , Janice was such a great character and hearing from her more would have been great .some of the laugh out loud positive moments where when Annika was giving 'feedback on Janice's boyfriend ." . Jonathan was kind of weird for me, he was the main character yet you never truly get to know him and feel his love for Annika . He was written to aloof for me a bit removed , illusive .I get that Annika needed to be told in that manner but I feel like everyone else got told in that same emotional detached manner and I think it hurt the whole storyline. I liked Tina the therapist and her interactions with Annika the best .Again those sessions were far and few apart but held the most insight and depth and should have been in a lot more of this read to really shed more light on Annika .The ending was very rushed, it had so much potential because the author really made it interesting, it could and again should have given us so many feels but again it feel flat for me and was emotionally disconnecting and again hurt the read for me. You get the feeling that this book is very personal to the author and I really respect that but somehow that whole story came across lacking "emotional depth and understanding of everyone's emotions and thoughts Lacking too much emotional dialogue, again with Annika it would have been extremely understandable but not from them all. Sorry to say it was just a okay read for me and I'm really sorry to write that because if the other characters represented themselves with depth and expression I think this book would have been a great read and eye opener.
  • Without a doubt, “The Girl He Used to Know” by Tracey Garvis-Graves, tops the list of my favorite books thus far this year! In fact, I can’t rave enough about this unique and compelling second-chance romance that left an indelible impression upon my soul. Boasting well-developed, multi-dimensional characters and a premise unlike any I’ve encountered before, Tracey Garvis-Graves delivers a gripping, emotional story that you won’t soon forget.

While Annika and Jonathan’s arduous journey towards reaching their HEA is paved with many pitfalls, as a reader that longs for the exceptional, I found it to be a road well worth traveling. Ignorant to most social clues, Annika has struggled to fit in for most of her life. And then there was Jonathan, who loved her, flaws and all. That is, until Annika inadvertently broke his heart. Now, years later—after a chance encounter—Annika hopes to win Jonathan back by proving to him how much she has changed. Still, some obstacles might be too great to overcome. So, the question remains, can this couple rise to the challenge? Or will fate step in and prevent them from ultimately beating the odds?

Eliciting a myriad of emotions, “The Girl He Used to Know” broke my heart and then slowly pieced it back together. It’s raw, it’s gritty, and it’s real. And it’s what true romance is all about.

The Princess and the Fangirl A Geekerella Fairy Tale Once Upon A Con Ashley Poston Books Reviews

  • "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a fandom in want of a princess will save that princess." That is the mindset Imogen "Mo" Lovelace has when she begins the #SaveAmara campaign on social media, trying to bring back from the dead Princess Amara, who was tragically fridged in the both the ending of the original Starfield TV show and the new reboot movie. She's excited to be at ExcelsiCon, meeting her friend Harper IRL for the first time, and is on a mission to save her favorite princess.

Too bad Princess Amara doesn't want to be brought back from the dead. Jessica Stone is desperate to put Starfield behind her and move on to bigger, better productions. After all, why would she want to stay when her Twitter and Instagram are flooded with trolls and manbabies who criticize everything about her? It's perfectly understandable that ExcelsiCon is the last place on earth Jess wants to be. Good thing she has Ethan, her best friend and personal assistant.

Then the script for the sequel leaks... And all signs are pointing to Jess. Fortunately, she has a plan when she and Imogen are mistaken for each other. After all, what harm is there in swapping places for a few days?

An excellent companion novel to Geekerella, Ashley Poston accurately captures the essence of the beauty, wonder, and camaraderie of being in a fandom, while simultaneously not shying away from the other, uglier side of fandom. Trolls are not only just in the dungeons, but everywhere you look and do their best to zap away all of your joy and fun. (*side eyes Voltron fandom*)

Fans of Geekerella will be happy to see the return of familiar faces and feel a sense of returning home on the floor of ExcelsiCon, while simultaneously falling in love with new characters and eagerly awaiting the reveal of who is behind the script leaks.

Look to the stars! Aim! Ignite!
  • Okay so I'm supposed to say here that I got this book from NetGalley for free in exchange for my honest unbiased review BUT- I also want you to know as soon as I finished this I went ahead and purchased my own copy so yeah...you can trust me here.
I feel like this book knew how to connect with me. It had a little bit of everything. There were several moments that made me laugh out loud, plenty of moments that made me sigh with love, and then really inspirational moments that I didn't see coming when I started this book.
Overall, I would recommend this book! To anyone that's ever loved a fandom of any kind, I bet it's in here(Doctor Who, Pokemon, Mortal Kombat, Buffy, Firefly, Harry Potter, Sailor Moon, and too many more to name are all mentioned several times throughout the book). To anyone that's ever gone or wanted to go to a convention, you'll love how this book takes you there.
This book is just a perfect little nerd book for my little nerd heart to love.
I also read Geekerella and honestly, I think I love this one more. It felt a little rushed and if I'm honest, I wish it would have been a bit longer to really get into this but this book was just so cute!
  • BAH THIS WAS SO CUTE! I loved Geekerella and this sequel was a delight that lived up to the first book! I'm so so happy I was given/won an arc so I could read it early!

I love the nerd/geek references made by the characters and I love this realistic view of conventions! That said - I've never switched places with a famous actress at the cons I've attended - but everything from the atmosphere on the con floor to the wondrous combination of fandoms and love is perfect! While this book features several new characters, all of our favorites from Geekerella make an appearance, so don't worry! I wish Starfield was a real show!
  • I think I connected more strongly to this book than I did Geekerella, because I saw A LOT of myself in Imogene, far more than I did with Elle. But even without that, this new story was lovely and heartwarming, and every character was fabulous, and I really just want to live in this magical world of ExcelsiCon forever, okay? *sniffle* ')

Another all-around gorgeous love letter to fandom, this resonated so strongly, and was so, so good for my fangirl heart.

Implausible? Yes. But aren't all fairy tales? )
  • *endless screams of happiness*

I love this book so much. I began binge reading it the second it landed on my . This book was the perfect sequel to Geekerella and I cannot thank the author enough for writing it.

    THANK YOU ASHLEY POSTON.

    Happiness is this duology
  • I didn’t like this as much as the first as it felt more rushed and moments weren’t enjoyed to their full extent or were entirely skipped over. It was a little disappointing in that sense and it took me a while to get into but the second half was redeeming enough!
  • I was not expecting this book to hit me like it did. I liked Geekerella and wanted to stay in the world. The empowerment I feel after finishing this book is amazing. I love that in this day and age we have books that tell us it is ok to be ourselves and that women do not have to be perfect.
  • Wonderful follow-up to Geekerella. It's a tribute to every fangirl and fanboy who wants to make a difference. Is there a third book? I hope so.

  • Awesome cookbook! I’ve been vegan for 14 years and this cookbook is exactly the way I eat. I love all the recipes in it and going to love cooking my way through it. I know many will be on my weekly rotation. It has everything you’d want to make, from very basic dressings to delicious desserts. I made the massaged kale salad with spicy chickpeas and pickled onions, and am excited to make the warm pinto bean salad with shiitake and radishes, black rice and black bean burger with mango salsa, general tso’ s broccoli bowl, seared tofu with cilantro orange dressing, vegetable tempeh wraps, quinoa and tempeh stuffed poblanos and the zesty lemon cake and apple galette! There’s so many, adzuki bean stew, baked falafel bowl to orange currant drop scones. I can’t wait! It’s rare that I want to make everything in a cookbook but this cookbook is exactly that. You can rest assured you’re using the best ingredients and it’s not complicated. These are recipes I’ll use from now on and years to come. I like that I’ll be sharing these with family and friends knowing they’re going to love them. I’m happy to have such a great cookbook and grateful that the Natural Gourmet Institute put this out! It’s a must have and I’m so glad I bought it!!
  • That's a complete guide to cook healthy food.

Hamilton The Revolution eBook LinManuel Miranda Jeremy McCarter Reviews

  • Let's just accept it...when Lin-Manuel Miranda does something, he does it right, all the way, and maybe better than anyone else.

I'm fortunate enough to have seen "Hamilton" twice. I've read the Chernow biography, listened to the cast recording non-stop (ha) since September, and been an avid follower of Lin's tweets, Facebook posts, interviews, #Ham4Ham shows, and Genius annotations. I've been a musical theatre geek for five decades and have never felt this excitement about any show (with the possible exception of A Chorus Line). So when I heard months ago that Lin and former New York magazine drama critic Jeremy McCarter were putting together a book about the creation of "Hamilton," I pre-ordered my copy and started counting the days. Now it's here, and.... wow. Just wow.

Given the show's deserved status as a cultural phenomenon that will be playing to sold-out houses for years, it would have been easy to just throw together a "behind-the-scenes" book with a few interviews, toss in some publicity stills, and have a guaranteed best-seller. This "Hamiltome" couldn't be further from that. Among other delights, it includes the full libretto of this sung-through (and rapped-through) show, with extensive annotations from LMM that give new insights, meaning, and historical context to the words that you might already know by heart; more than 30 essays about the cast members, the production team, the creative process, and the facts of Hamilton's life; copies of relevant historical documents referenced in the show; pages from LMM's notebooks with early drafts and outlines; and a stunningly beautiful array of production photographs, cast portraits, and backstage candids. And all of this is thoughtfully organized and packaged in a beautifully bound volume with ivory deckle-edged paper - a book like books used to be. (Trust me, this is one book you don't want to read on ; it's actually a sensory experience to hold it and turn the pages.)

As McCarter notes in the Introduction, the title "Hamilton - The Revolution" has two meanings. There is the American Revolution that is brought to life in this show, and there is the revolution of the show itself - "a musical that changes the way that Broadway sounds, that alters who gets to tell the story of our founding, that lets us glimpse the new, more diverse America rushing our way." Do what you can to see "Hamilton," either on Broadway or when it comes to your town. It's unlike anything else. Until then, this book and the original cast recording will get you as close as possible to an orchestra seat at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
  • Don't buy the version. It is not in format; it's just photocopies of double columned pages that doesn't fit the screen and is very hard to read. You have to manually enlarge each page separately if you want to read it.
  • A few days back, I wrote a piece on my blog to try to explain how much I love Lin-Manuel Miranda's astonishing musical Hamilton, despite the fact that I've never seen it, and only enjoyed the amazing soundtrack. It's not a love that's died down over the past few weeks - indeed, it's only continued to grow - so it's no surprise that I picked up Hamilton A Revolution, which tells the story of the writing of the musical, as well as providing Miranda's annotations for all of the show's songs and lyrics.

Hamilton A Revolution is unabashedly a book that's written to capitalize on the show's popularity, as well as the difficulty in seeing it. Filled with pictures of the production, the cast, the props, and more, the book provides a bit of soothing balm for those of us out in the rest of America who probably won't ever get to see the show on Broadway, and definitely not while Miranda is still playing the lead role. The fact that the book alternates between short essays and songs from the show allows the pictures to nicely complement the text at all times, giving the reader a sense of how the show might play out, and giving us the chance to pair images with the songs that so many of us already know by heart. More than that, though, they give you a sense of the care that went into the staging of the show; from the set to the costuming, from the insanely detailed props to the intricate stage layout, the book conveys the fact that the show is every bit as carefully crafted and intricately constructed as the album and the songs.

The essays only serve to back this up, too. By and large, the essays serve as a chronological tracking of the birth of the show, beginning with Miranda's initial songs, moving through the famous White House performance, and following the story all the way through the premiere and beyond. Meanwhile, the book's structure - the aforementioned alternating between songs and essays - allows some essays to pair more directly with certain songs, focusing on key roles, casting decisions, historical craft, and more. It all comes together to make something more than your usual "behind the scenes" book, instead giving you a rich portrait of the show, the history, the key players, and more.

But let's be clear the main draw for many people (myself included) are the lyrics and annotations by Miranda. Even with all the time I've spent on Genius reading the show's annotations can't replace the glee of reading the lyrics in a beautifully made book, and getting to savor all of Miranda's wonderful prose - the wordplay, the historical allusions, the shout-outs to old school rap and Broadway staples, all of it. And better still are Miranda's annotations, which eschew the things I already knew in favor of personal commentary, silly asides, mentions of his favorite parts of the show, and more. Rather than just being a director's commentary sort of thing, the annotations feel more personal and engaging, giving me the sense once again that Miranda isn't just unfairly brilliant; he's also funny, engaging, thoughtful, and incredibly personable.

I could also mention how beautiful the book is - not just the pictures, but the beautiful cover, the intentionally "ancient" feel that makes it feel like a Revolutionary War tome - but really, here's the thing. Do you love Hamilton? If the answer is "yes," then you'll really love this. If the answer is "no"...well, what's wrong with you, then? (Acceptable answers include "I haven't heard it" and...well, that's about it.)
  • This book is a thing of beauty! I ordered it early and it - literally - just arrived at my front door. Giddy with excitement, I pulled back the packaging tab and inside was this glorious tome. The design is exquisite, the words flow as beautifully as the pictures from page to page lyrics, insights and anecdotes galore - nothing has been overlooked. To be truthful, I came back to to order another as a gift, but there don't seem to be any available. So glad I ordered early! Looking forward to enveloping myself in this Hamilton word and pictures story, that is until I actually get to see the show... A girl can dream -)

Edited to add and the dream is almost a reality... Used this gorgeous book to deliver surprise tickets to my niece who turned 18 today. I'm in New York and tonight's the night! AND, Miranda wins the Pulitzer on the same day. It's been a bit of a day!!!
  • Bought the eBook a while ago but hadn't tried to read it until now since it won't open on the desktop app.

Unfortunately, the version is impossible to read. Looks
like a scanned copy of the physical book. Zooming in doesn't help, the text is still super blurry.

Metallurgy The Art of Extracting Metals From Their Ores Classic Reprint John Percy 9781330513057 Books Reviews

  • John Percy may have died in 1889, but his influence in the world of metallurgy lives on. Percy published a series of books on the various metals (mining, manufacture, and processing). His volumes on the manufacture of iron and steel are crucial to an understanding of the history of ferrous metallurgy and still used today. This volume covers fuels (wood, peat, coal, charcoal, and coke), fire-clays and crucibles, copper, zinc, and brass. Hopefully his other works will also be reprinted.

For fans of Caitlin Doughty, Mary Roach, and CSI shows, a renowned forensic scientist on death and mortality.

Dame Sue Black is an internationally renowned forensic anthropologist and human anatomist. She has lived her life eye to eye with the Grim Reaper, and she writes vividly about it in this book, which is part primer on the basics of identifying human remains, part frank memoir of a woman whose first paying job as a schoolgirl was to apprentice in a butcher shop, and part no-nonsense but deeply humane introduction to the reality of death in our lives. It is a treat for CSI junkies, murder mystery and thriller fans, and anyone seeking a clear-eyed guide to a subject that touches us all.

Cutting through hype, romanticism, and cliché, she recounts her first dissection; her own first acquaintance with a loved one's death; the mortal remains in her lab and at burial sites, as well as scenes of violence, murder, and criminal dismemberment; and about investigating mass fatalities due to war, accident, or natural disaster, such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. She uses key cases to reveal how forensic science has developed and what her work has taught her about human nature.

Acclaimed by bestselling crime writers and fellow scientists alike, All That Remains is neither sad nor macabre. While Professor Black tells of tragedy, she also infuses her stories with a wicked sense of humor and much common sense.

PDF All That Remains A Renowned Forensic Scientist on Death Mortality and Solving Crimes Audible Audio Edition Sue Black Angela Dawe Brilliance Audio Books

"A fascinating book about a subject that is often frightening or disturbing, but is inevitable, death. The author is as much an expert on the subject as anyone living can claim to be, a professor of anatomy and forensic anthropology, as well as passing on her considerable knowledge to her students, she has also worked with the police to help identify remains, and even travelled to the sites of international disasters and warzones to aid in the massive task of identifying victims.
While never stinting on the scientific aspects of her work, such as how the body changes after death, and how even partial remains can be used for identification, she is not afraid to bring a more personal and human tone, talking about her first experiences with a dead family member, and most movingly about the deaths of her parents. This personal aspect added another dimension to the book , giving a real human interest aspect as we learn about what motivated the author to take up her profession, and why she has such a passion for its continuing place in the education of future doctors and scientists.
One of the most fascinating things discussed in the book was what happens when somebody donates their body to science, something few of us really consider. The care and respect that goes into the process as a whole as well as the science behind it made for some very interesting reading..
I would highly recommend this book for anyone with an interest in science or forensics , its a fascinating and compelling book, both intense and entertaining,
I read a review copy courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are entirely my own"

  • Absolutely absorbing! You must read this book. Fascinating account of death by someone with enormous experience in this field. I don’t wish to repeat the previous review, but I totally agree. The author has the ability to avoid too much technical detail, has a great sense of humour and makes an often awkward subject approachable and personal. You will not be disappointed.
  • I absolutely loved this book. Not only was the information enlightening, but it was presented in a forthright yet compassionate manner. Ms. Black is a shining example of everything those in her profession should aspire to be. Superb reading!
  • I admire Dr. Black and her work very much and her book was an extremely interesting read!
