Heroes in Crisis 2018 #7 eBook Tom King Mitch Gerads Clay Mann Tomeu Morey Jorge Fornes Travis Moore Reviews

  • Let me start by saying that the cover of Superman sweeping his arms and shouting “Enough!” never happens in this comic. Superman makes no appearances. That is the least of this comics problems.

There are only two more issues after this one and through the first six I’ve been absolutely perplexed as to where Tom King is trying to take the story. It feels like he keeps switching gears and can’t figure out where to take the plot. This issue seems to be getting slightly better reviews than issue six but I would argue that it’s even worse and the average user ratings on Comicbook Round Up reflect this with an abysmal 5.0 currently.

I have no idea what is going on in this issue. I wrote a whole other review filled with spoilers but changed my mind and will avoid them out of respect to the creators. I know that there are at least five companion books outside of the main series so maybe they answer some of my questions but if so then I think that sucks because I’m a firm believer that a crossover should always be enjoyable on its own and not reliant on ancillary comics. My suspicion is the actual problem is that Tom King seems to be writing this story for himself rather than the readers. It seems like forever ago that the secret tapes of Sanctuary were released to the world and that seemed like a major plot point but we’ve heard nothing more about it for several issues. Every character seems to act in a completely irrational and melodramatic manner and events happen that seem to have no relationship to whatever central plot I thought King was going for.

I’m a big fan of Tom King but this really feels like a classic case of talent getting a bit too full of itself. The reviews for the series have been steadily dropping with the average from professional reviewers now sitting in the high 6’s/ low 7’s. User ratings have been even less favorable. In the previous issue I wrote that I didn’t think the plot moved forward in the least and if the plot advances at all in this issue I don’t know where it’s going. The series feels like it’s stuck in knee deep mud, spinning its wheels. Sales wise, the series isn’t doing bad. Issue 6 ranked 5th for all comics shipped in January although I would argue that 79k comics shipped is rather lackluster for a crossover of this magnitude. By contrast, Doomsday Clock #8 shipped over 123k in December. Given the reviews, Tom King is lucky to get numbers even as high as he’s getting.

I really want this series to succeed but as we approach the finish line it appears to be digging itself deeper and deeper into a quagmire. I simply cannot give this series anything more than a massive fail. Besides the artwork and a few flashes of Tom King brilliance I find almost nothing redeeming. I kept wondering how King was going to handle the ending but I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter and it will likely wipe out everything we’ve seen thus far. What the series is about is what we’ve seen, character interactions and dialogue. It could be interesting but it’s not. Wally’s West’s sadness over the loss of his family could make a great story but all it is is endless pathos. 4 of the 24 pages in this issue are Wally in a Sanctuary interview and he’s sad. REALLY sad. We also get a bunch of pages of Wally doing some gardening and apparently making an actual woman out of plants. I have no idea. I don’t understand any of it but it’s all tiresome and tedious. Characterization can be the most rewarding part of any story but this is just a slog. Let’s see where it goes in issue 8.
  • Going to keep this review short and sweet. This is just bad. The series has gotten worse with each issue, the characters are so out of character to me that I'm not sure what I'm reading. King's writing is a let down in this series, trying for fanservice I guess without a good solid story.
  • I'm a fairly optimistic person but I believe that my patience has run out. Gave it the benefit of the doubt but when you're 7 issues in, something big has already supposed to happen. I'm not sure if this can be redeemed and I really regret purchasing this instead of just waiting for it on DCU. Huge disappointment for what seemed to be an intriguing premise.
