When Leah lands in San Francisco, she’s hoping she can leave her past—along with her broken-down life in Seattle—behind. But what she can’t run from is her present reality as an alcoholic on the downward spiral, and the strong future possibility that she might die in the gutter. So, she quits drinking and resolves to live a new life, determined to be a better person and resist the siren song of addiction, staying a few steps ahead of her demons all the while.

But then Leah takes a job at a P.I. Firm and her resolve is thoroughly tested. Instead of alcohol, she becomes addicted to work and the nonstop demands of the agency. In a desperate attempt to break the cycle, she answers a mysterious online ad calling for writers and ends up working as an assistant to serial entrepreneur Scarlet Monroe, a woman who seems almost too good to be true, and like everything Leah has always wanted to be. But when Leah is hired as Scarlet’s personal assistant and gets in deeper with Scarlet and her cult-like company, the demons from her past come alive again, and this time they refuse to go away.

The sequel to Between the Shadow and Lo and the second installment in the West Coast Trilogy, West Is San Francisco is a surreal ride through the strange secrets—and intangible magic—of San Francisco.

"I just finished reading West Is San Francisco by Lauren Sapala, and I can't wait to read it again. It is that Good!!! Lauren is so insightful that I feel like I learn so much from all of her books. She definitely knows how to write a novel that keeps a reader engaged from start to finish. I once read that Hemingway started out writing by trying to make one sentence of absolute truth or authenticity after another. That is what you get when you read anything by Lauren Sapala: Total Authenticity. I feel like I have a clearer understanding of the world after I read her novels, but her novels are also very entertaining and great at getting you totally immersed in her world so that you forget your problems for awhile. I Highly Recommend all of her books."

West Is San Francisco Lauren Sapala Books Reviews

  • West Is San Francisco by Lauren Sapala is a surprising read in many ways. The characters are drawn so well, feel so real that the start of the story leads the reader on a roller coaster ride of emotion. Leah, moving from Seattle to San Francisco, is an alcoholic. Leah’s voice and pain are authentic, her journey to a better place grabbing me and hauling me in. But while I couldn’t wait to turn the page to see the next step Leah would take, moments of frustration and anger at the character occur. Again, this only makes me identify the skillful portrayal of the protagonist throughout the story by the author.

I enjoyed following Leah through her jobs in San Francisco and journey of discovery. As she moves towards recovery, there are stumbling blocks and other addictions like her new job at a P.I. Firm. She moves on to be an assistant for Scarlet Monroe, and her time at the strange company with an even stranger boss helps Leah discover her own personal goodness and strength.

The writer goes beyond a compelling plot. The writing is creative and full of careful writing craft. Descriptions such as “they all stared with disbelieving eyes, their lips sewn together like stitched-up wounds” (Location 3264 Edition) kept me not only reading but rereading and wishing I could imitate some of the beautiful descriptions in my own writing. Overall, this book was not always an easy read as it is personal and emotional, but it is a novel that should not be missed.
  • West is San Francisco is the page-turning story of a sober alcoholic who drops booze but ends up addicted to work instead. Like all of Lauren Sapala's writing, it contains vivid descriptions of unforgettable characters, and it's honest even when it hurts. ESPECIALLY when it hurts. It is the second book of a trilogy but is very capable of standing on its own. Like Lauren's first novel, Between the Shadow and Lo, I couldn't put this down. And -- no spoilers -- when it was clear Leah was about to initiate the book's climactic confrontation, I literally trembled with anticipation. I'm not trembling anymore, but I am very much looking forward to the conclusion of this trilogy.
  • Lauren Sapala writes with a kind of truth and raw depth that it becomes impossible to put her books down. West is San Francisco is no different. I love the way she paints her characters, tells her story, and provides rich insight into the demons that taunt many writers. We see ourselves in her words. Before I even finished it, this book inspired me to work on my own. I can’t wait for the next one.

  • Loved it, definitely not as gritty as the first in this series but a great read! Can’t wait for the third in this series to be released ❤️
