Oops! How to Rock the Mother of All Surprises A Positive Guide To Your Unexpected Pregnancy Tracy Moore 9781440562068 Books Reviews

  • It's funny and has some good advice, though I feel like it comes from a very biased perspective. It makes assumptions about the reader's situation that may not be accurate. I realize that the author only has her own experience to refer to, but one shouldn't assign certain aspects of their personal experience to a whole group of readers. I think the section about how one's pregnancy will affect her relationship is presumptuous and ought to be taken with a grain of salt. The author is forthright about the physical and not-so-pretty challenges of pregnancy, but gives the reader no assurance of the beauty that comes with it as well, often referring to the pregnant physique as "blob" or "blobby", which may feel true, but I think some positive body image dialogue wouldn't go amiss. The end chapter is nice.
A raw, hilarious, and in many ways truthful read, but paints a generally unflattering, unspecial portrait of pregnancy, surprise or not.
  • If you are “very pregnant” and have already wet yourself reading Ophelia Austin-Small’s book Surprise Motherhood, you will need a second pair of Depends because of the laughing you’ll doing reading this book. How can a book that so painlessly gives good advice be so funny and realistic simultaneously? I suspect it’s the author’s journalistic background shining through.
  • A really good read for anyone who wasn't necessarily expecting A Little one.
  • This book really helped me to deal with the feelings I had when I became pregnant unexpectedly. It was so nice to know that I wasn't alone in the feelings I was having. I felt validated. Tracy has a wonderful way of connecting with the reader and she tells you exactly what you need to hear when you need to hear it. A surprise pregnancy can be extremely emotionally taxing and, at least in my case, there wasn't anyone to talk to about how I was feeling. I truly did feel better after reading this book. I now have a one month old baby and I credit Tracy with getting me through those first few difficult months of pregnancy. My advice is to read this book and try to enjoy the pregnancy as much as possible.
  • It helped me a lot to prepare for my beautiful baby girl. I never realized it would be so rewarding and the untold struggles of motherhood. Thank you Tracy Moore!
  • First time mom & I loved this book!! She’s so real, and funny!!
  • When I found myself unexpectedly pregnant, I went to the library and checked out the entire pregnancy shelf. Every book took the approach of "congratualtions! you're finally pregnant, sit back and let your body do what you've been preparing it to do for years!"

News flash, guys, about half of pregnancies in the United States are unplanned - my body was not a temple, and it was definitely not ready for pregnancy. Tracy's book put my mind at ease that I was going to be fine and my baby will be, too. I appreciated her taking me through the entire pregnancy and the first few months of caring for baby, and the focus on things I had not thought of, like my relationship with my husband. Greatly appreciated was her humor and tone, since it made this a book that my husband would actually read, too.

If I would change anything it would only be to get a little more factual information on a few things. In particular, the time between the positive test and the first doctor's appointment (six weeks) was really nerve wracking, and I would have appreciated some guidance on what to do with myself during that time. Come to find out from my obstetrician that the only thing to do during that time is take folic acid, try and eat better, don't drink or smoke, but still - it would have put my mind at ease to have that spelled out for me.
  • I will never go through my own pregnancy, but I will read this book again. It's clear, it's hysterical and it makes you want to sit down with the author and have her tell you not only about what pregnancy is like but what it's really like to raise a kid.

I've already given copies of this book to two friends who are expecting and should probably just start stockpiling copies for the future.
